REMARKS BY THE FATHER AT THE MEMORIAL SERVICE
"General Mark O'Neil soldiers and officers of the US Army, ladies and gentlemen. I on behalf of Uday's grandmother, sister, my wife, his mother, relatives and friends both here and in India extend our deepest gratitude to you all as you stand beside us here for our beloved son. His grandmother writes" my heartfelt thanks goes to the Army, and to the nation which got out the best out of dear Uday Singh- to keep the flag of freedom fluttering on top of the world; he did his duty for the principles of the Army, without caring for his life in such a short time and young age. I being old and invalid would not be able to attend my grandson's service, and therefore my thoughts are being conveyed to all concerned, " and from Uday's aunt in India a family prayer," Dear Uday, we are very grateful to God for the opportunity of being close to you, and for your efforts to enrich our lives. Eversince your eyes closed in eternal sleep, we have learned a lesson deep. The good go young they say, how terribly terribly true. May the good Lord bless and keep you beside him always." Once again, our eternal gratitude to all in honoring Uday's supreme sacrifice and sharing our grief. Thank you and may God bless you all. "

Purple Heart and Meritorious Service Medal Presentation

Preet Singh, Uday's father, a colonel in the Indian Army, accepts a Meritorious Service Medal and Purple Heart on behalf of his son, Sgt. Uday Singh, from Brig. Gen. Frank Kearney III on Jan 12th 2004 at Fort Riley, Kansas.

The parents flew in from India to accept the awards. Col. Singh spent time with soldiers that knew his son at a luncheon, thanking them for their service and the friendship they had with his son. The Singh's presence and their son's service is demonstrative of the bonds America has with other militaries, said Brig. Gen. Frank Kearney III, assistant division commander (maneuver), 24th Infantry Division (Mech). "We have a son of an Armor officer from India fighting in the American Army and fighting in Iraq against terrorism,"said Kearney. It's a small world. We have a great passion between the militaries around the world, a brotherhood that exists where we understand each other.

Brigadier General Kearney presented the first Purple Heart earned by Uday when wounded in battle on 15th Oct 2003 and the order was dated November 26th 2003, four days before he died. He was also awarded with the Meritorious Service Medal for "exceptionally meritorious service as an Armor Crewman. His tactical and technical expertise, determination, and dedication to duty resulted in a compilation of many achievements and an increased combat readiness posture for the Battalion. His leadership ability and experience were invaluable assets during numerous training exercises. Sergeant Singh's sincere devotion to duty and performance reflect great credit upon him, Fort Riley, and the United States Army.
