USINPAC expresses sincere gratitude for the sacrifice of Sgt. Uday Singh , an Indian-American who fell in his country's service in Iraq. Sgt. Singh's sacrifice reflects the growing contributions of Indian-Americans to this great land. Sgt. Singh immigrated to America in the late 1990s with his father and sister, in August 2000, Singh enlisted in the US Army. He was deployed to Kuwait in 2001, when he was awarded the Army Achievement Medal. Singh arrived in Iraq in September 2003. His valiant actions as a platoon leader resulted in the capture of a large cache of arms. This action probably saved many American and Iraqi lives, but resulted in Singh's death. At his funeral in Chandigarh, India, Lt. General James Campbell of the Pacific Command said of Singh, 'He is our hero'. On this solemn occasion, Sanjay Puri, the executive director of USINPAC, observed: With sadness and pride, we celebrate the life of Uday Singh, a hero of the war on terrorism, a loyal American, and a source of tremendous pride to the Indian-American community.
The family also expresses their gratitude to all those who shared our grief on phone and in person.
