1.A tribute to Sgt Uday Singh was read out at a NCO's Dedication Service by SGT. Gary Corriea on 1st March 2006. The extracts of the tribute are reproduced below:

                             In Dedication to SGT Uday Singh.

a. Born and raised in India, Uday Singh immigrated to America in 2000 and enlisted in the US Army in August 2000 as a Tanker. He began basic training on 28th August 2000 at Ft. Knox, Kentucky as a Private. PVT Singh graduated basic training on 19 December and was assigned to Charlie Company 1st Battalion, 34th Armor, 1st Infantry Division on 19 January 2001.

d. In November of 2003, then SPC Singh had just received the notification that his citizenship had been granted and was due to go on leave in January 2004 to be sworn in as a citizen in Chicago Illinois.

e. While on patrol along Route Mobile, just east of Ramadi, SPC Singh's patrol was ambushed by RPG's and small arms fire from insurgents in buildings and dug in. His section was moving on foot and with vehicles to gain a flanking position, while returning fire. SPC Singh dismounted on several occasions to assist with covering fire, assist with call for fire and engage the enemy. After returning to his truck his section moved to flank the enemy. While re-establishing contact, his .50 Cal. jammed. his truck backed into a covered position to fix the stoppage. After clearing the stoppage, the truck moved back into position where they received small arms fire. As SPC Singh returned lethal fire he was shot and severly wounded at 0943 hrs, 1st December 2003. The valiant actions of SPC Singh and his platoon during this engagement resulted in the destruction of the enemy and capturing a large weapons cache.

f. SPC (P) Uday Singh was promoted posthumously to the rank of SGT on 1st December 2003. He was laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery with full honors and was granted his citizenship. SGT Singh did not have to join Army, but he did, to defend his new country, his new home.

g. SGT Uday Singh represents the highest sacrifice any soldier can give.



2.An inter school Ex-Tempore Debate Competition between selected schools of Chandigarh, India was organised by St Stephen's School on 22 April 2006 and will be held every year on 23rd April - Uday's birthday. Besides presentation of certificates of participation, the UDAY SINGH MEMORIAL TROPHY (donated by the family) will be presented to the school standing first in the competition.

3.Uday was mentioned by name during a debate in the US Congress by Congressman Joseph Crowley. The Crowley Amendment Recognizes Contribution of Sikh Americans to the War on Terror.

Congressman Joseph Crowley (NY-7th District), voiced his support for the Defense Authorization Bill (HR 1815) which provides authorization for funding to protect service men and women. An amendment to the bill, which Crowley proposed, would honor the diversity of the men and women serving. He specifically commended the contribution of Specialist Uday Singh, the first Sikh American to die while fighting in Iraq. The Crowley amendment was included in the en - bloc managers amendment and the final bill passed XXX-XX.

"Specialist Singh joined the military because he believed in what the United States represents and because he felt the strong desire to fight for the freedoms we have here. Diversity is an essential part of the strength of the Armed Forces, in which members having different ethnic backgrounds and faiths share the same goal of defending the cause of freedom, democracy and liberty," commented Crowely.

"At a time when racism and discrimination still exist, I feel that it is especially important to take a moment to recognize and appreciate the contribution of Americans like Mr. Singh. These men and women gave their lives, sacrificed time with their families and bravely served their countries in the War on terror," Continued Crowley

4.The third Scholarship grant of USD 500 was also given to St. Stephens School, Chandigarh, India and USD 500 to the FRG of Charlie Company 1st Battalion 34 Armor Regt. for the welfare of soldiers families/children. These grants are given annually.

5.A Memorial service on Uday's 3rd Death Anniversary was held at St. Stephens School, Chandigarh, India on Dec 1, 2006.

6.The board of directors of the Foundation appeal to all for voluntary contributions to enable the Foundation to meet the goals and thus continue to honor and remember Uday Singh.
